Free Printable Bookish Cat Bookmarks

Bookish Cat Bookmarks

There is something almost ceremonial about the act of closing a book. You have just spent an hour — or four, or eight — in another world entirely. Your coffee has gone cold. The dog has given up waiting for his walk. And now, as you reluctantly return to reality, you reach for a bookmark. Not just any scrap of paper or folded receipt, but something that feels worthy of the pages it marks.

Ask any dedicated reader why they use bookmarks instead of dog-earring their pages, and you will hear a near-identical response: it is about respect. Books are not just objects. They carry stories, ideas, friendships, and memories. Treating them well — pressing a proper bookmark between their pages rather than bending back a corner — is a small but meaningful ritual that book lovers take surprisingly seriously.

A bookmark is not just a placeholder. It’s a promise — I will be back for you.

Beyond the sentimental, bookmarks are genuinely practical. They hold your place with precision, let you move quickly between a novel and a reference book, and serve as little time capsules. How many readers have found an old bookmark slipped between pages and been transported back to exactly where they were when they last read that chapter? There is real magic in that.

And then there is the collecting. For a significant subset of readers, bookmarks have become a hobby within a hobby. Literary bookmarks from independent bookshops, illustrated bookmarks from artist markets, seasonal bookmarks swapped between reading friends — the community around bookmarks is warm, enthusiastic, and endlessly creative. Printable bookmarks have become especially popular because they combine personalization with accessibility: anyone with a home printer can have a beautiful, high-quality bookmark in minutes.

Why Cat Bookmarks Are Genuinely Special

The relationship between cats and books is ancient, intimate, and a little mysterious. Walk into any independent bookshop worth its salt and there is an excellent chance a cat is already there — asleep on a stack of new arrivals, watching customers from a high shelf, or sitting directly on the book you were about to pick up. Cats and books simply belong together.

Cats are the natural companions of readers. They are quiet, they appreciate stillness, and they understand that some hours are meant to be spent in a soft chair doing nothing that looks productive to the outside world. A cat sitting beside you while you read does not demand conversation or activity. It simply exists in comfortable parallel, which is exactly what a good reading companion should do.

The “bookish cat” aesthetic has become a genuine visual language in literary culture. It appears on tote bags, mugs, stickers, and prints. It speaks to a personality type: someone who prefers a good book to a crowded party, who knows the specific pleasure of reading on a rainy afternoon, and who has probably named at least one cat after a fictional character.

Cat bookmarks tap into all of this. They are immediately recognizable as the property of someone with taste and a sense of humor. They make wonderful gifts for readers — thoughtful without being expensive, personal without requiring much information about the recipient. And for readers who are also cat owners (a significant overlap), they feel like a little self-portrait tucked inside their favorite books.

Printing Tips for the Best Results

The designs are created to look great on a standard home inkjet printer, but a few small choices make a big difference in the final quality. Here is what we recommend.

Paper Size: A4

Open the PDF and set your printer to A4, with scaling set to “Actual Size” or 100%. Do not let your printer auto-scale the document, as this can shift the crop marks and trim lines.

Cardstock: 200–250 gsm

Standard 80 gsm copy paper will work in a pinch, but 200–250 gsm cardstock produces bookmarks that feel substantial and professional. Most home printers handle up to 250 gsm without issue — check your printer’s paper tray specifications to be sure.

Print Quality: Best / Photo

Select the highest quality print setting available in your printer dialog. This ensures fine details in the illustrations come out sharp and color gradients print smoothly.

Laminating (Optional, Highly Recommended)

Running the printed sheet through a home laminator before cutting transforms the bookmarks into genuinely durable keepsakes. A 80–100 micron laminating pouch works perfectly. Laminate first, then cut — not the other way around, as this prevents delamination at the edges.

Cutting: Scissors or Paper Trimmer

A guillotine-style paper trimmer gives the cleanest straight edge, but careful scissors work just as well. Cut along the outer crop marks for standard bookmark dimensions of approximately 5 cm × 18 cm.

Hole Punch + Tassel (Optional)

For a finishing touch, use a single-hole punch about 5 mm from the top edge and thread through a small tassel or a piece of ribbon or baker’s twine. This makes the bookmarks feel polished and gift-ready. Metallic or earthy-toned tassels pair especially well with our color palettes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, completely free — no email address, no account, no hidden steps. Click the download button and the PDF goes straight to your device. We believe beautiful printables should be accessible to everyone.

Absolutely. The designs are optimized for home inkjet and laser printers alike. For the best color results on an inkjet, select “Best” or “Photo” quality in your printer settings and use cardstock rather than regular copy paper. A laser printer on plain cardstock also produces lovely results.

We recommend 200–250 gsm cardstock for a sturdy, professional feel. If your printer cannot handle heavy cardstock, 160–180 gsm is a good middle ground. Standard 80 gsm copy paper will also work if that is what you have on hand, though the bookmarks will be more flexible.

Laminating is optional but highly recommended, especially if you plan to use the bookmarks regularly or gift them. A laminated bookmark resists moisture, fingerprints, and the general wear of being slipped in and out of books. If you do laminate, do it before cutting for the cleanest edge.

Yes! The free download includes a personal use license, which covers printing for yourself, giving as gifts to friends and family, and using in non-commercial settings like a book club, library reading group, or classroom. The only restriction is resale — please do not sell printed copies or redistribute the digital files.

This almost always comes down to the scaling setting in your print dialog. Open the PDF, go to Print, and make sure the Page Scaling or Size Options setting is set to “Actual Size,” “100%,” or “None” — not “Fit to Page.” Also confirm your paper size is set to A4. If you are still having trouble, try opening the file in a different PDF viewer such as Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Cut and laminate the bookmark first. Then use a single-hole punch to make a hole roughly 5 mm from the top center edge. Thread a tassel, ribbon, or piece of baker’s twine through the hole and secure with a knot or a small jump ring. Metallic gold or forest green tassels look especially lovely with our palette. Ready-made tassels are available at most craft stores and on craft supply websites.
